Mayors and Municipalities for Circular Economy
ISWA's mission is to promote and develop sustainable waste management worldwide, to create a cleaner-healthier planet. To achieve this, ISWA's knowledge and best practices need to be accessible to decision makers and those who influence policy on local, regional and national levels.
ISWA’s Initiative for Mayors and Municipalities (IMM) is proud to partner with OVAM – Public Waste Agency of Flanders for the 2019 World Resources Forum. OVAM will be hosting the 2019 event where the key theme will be solutions and practices to move from a linear and fossil to a circular and low carbon economy. The forum will consider opportunities and practical solutions which take into account case studies of what has and has not worked, and why.
ISWA will organise a side event which will take the form of a panel consisting of ISWA IMM Ambassador Philip Heylen, alongside Mayors and Municipal leaders from around the world. The session will address some of the key themes of the WRF, specifically ‘Closing Loops – Transitions at Work’ – we will invite the speakers to share best practices on the steps they have taken locally to achieve a circular economy through better waste and resource management.
Waste management will be a key part of the transition towards a circular economy, and cities will be essential in implementing measures to facilitate this. From waste collection and transport to incineration and recycling, cities are in a position to make the big decisions that will make the transition to a circular economy possible.
To discuss this, IMM is inviting a range of stakeholders, from municipalities, NGOs and the private sector to discuss the implementation, challenges, and overall benefits of a waste management and circular economy strategies at city level.
