Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is an open access pilot & demonstration plant for bio-based products & processes in the Port of Ghent. It started as an interregional initiative between Flanders and the Netherlands, but soon this initiative proofed to be instrumental in helping innovators from all over Europe to bridge their so-called valley of death. BBEPP assists by bringing scientific research (TRL2-4) to scalable industry relevant environment (TRL5-6) or even to (pre-) industrial scale (TRL 7-8). This allows to validate the technology in a relevant environment and to obtain prototypes for market development or validation. Working on relevant and scalable equipment enables collection of the data for performing reliable techno economic and life cycle analyses. These analyses are required to engage management and/or investors and the partners in the value chain. BBEPP fulfills such role in several publicly funded regional and EU-projects (actually 18 ongoing: www.bbeu.org/pilotplant/category/projects/).
BBEPP performs similar tasks in bilateral private collaboration with companies in the biotech domain and bio-based economy. Since its establishment BBEPP served over 100 customers, (mainly EU) in over 200 different projects for development, scale up or pilot production.
Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant has 4 process halls and a lab for analysis & microbiology: a hall of 907m2 for up- and downstream processing of biomass; a fermentation hall of 500 m2 for industrial biotechnology processes and product purification and an ATEX-proof ‘green process hall’ of 285 m2 for green chemistry and solvent based processes. The 4th hall is 1000m² and is dedicated for the larger scale purification processing and processing of sensitive materials for pharma, food and feed applications. BBEPP has the relevant industrial equipment for upscaling most of the bio based & bio catalytic processes. A full list of the equipment at BBEPP can be found at www.bbeu.org/pilotplant/expertise/.
