31. Extracting value from slags: the case of non-ferrous metals industry

Closing material loops for metals such as Cu, Ni, Pb also enables the recovery of precious metals. Metals can be recovered at high efficiencies (up to 98%) and in very pure form. The challenges are related to the collection of the materials and to the management of residues. Closing the material loop therefore requires the development of high value recycling routes for slags. We will discuss the regulatory context, innovative technologies and the business context, and identify how the non-ferrous residues can generate value in a circular economy.
